Hurricane Irene
I have live to odd times in New York City before: the terrorist attacks on 9/11, the smoke ban of 2003, the great black out of 2003, the transit strike of 2005, etc. I can add another odd day to my list now, the night that Irene touched New York. The subways were not running, neither the buses, many people got evacuated from flood risk areas (beach towns and areas near the water, like battery park, Coney Island and far Rockaway. We were told to stack up for an emergency (batteries, water, can food, toiletries, etc) and on saturday afternoon started to rain. I was in the highest ara of Manhattan, Fort Washington. I was safe from flooding, but not from wind. Around midnight the worse of the storm hit Manhattan. It was heavily raining & very strong winds. The tree outside my firescape was slaming its branches against my window panes, and the whole night was hunted by the sounds of the winds. At 12:30, I could not hold it anymore and I convinced my BF to go outside for a “walk”. He put on shorts and sandals and head out. It was quite an experience. We ran around the block, and into Bennett Park, which it the highest point in the island. The winds were strong, and some corners were like wind tunnels. We were soaked, but it was not cold. Actually, it was quite nice and refreshing if it wasn’t for the eerie desserted streets and the hauling wind. We have been watching the news all day, and is scary to hear the damage taken by the city by Hurricane Irene.
